I'm a detailed-oriented person. This is a very good thing since I'm an event planner. (My focus on details can also be a distraction if left unchecked, but for now let's just say it's an attribute not a flaw.) Since I tend to notice details in most situations, I like to think that it's the little things that make a difference. They can turn a nice wedding into an unforgettable celebration.
Now, I'm not going to recite a checklist that we've all read in one place or another. You already know that design details like a beautiful stationery suite, perfectly woven wedding colors, unique placecards and a knock-out favor will make a wow-statement. Let's talk about the details that are the unsung heroes. A convenient coat check, strategically placed children's activities, and restroom amenities.
Anyone who attends a wedding during a cool season will certainly appreciate a coat check. This little detail is often overlooked for a variety of reasons. You may assume that your venue has a place to store coats, but be certain to ask about this on your site tour. You may also forget that while you are going to dress at the ceremony venue and won't be wearing a coat over your gown, your guests will be weathering the elements dressed in their finery. In either case, it's fairly simple to set up a coat check. Your venue may have one already set up on site that you can use if you request it ahead of time. If one is not available, most event rental companies offer coat racks complete with hangers and tickets for a reasonable fee. You just need to designate an area at your venue that is out of the way but still convenient to the entrance.
Will you have children attending or participating in your wedding? Then you definitely need to plan a few activities to keep them occupied and entertained while the grown-ups celebrate. Really, how many kids actually care about the first dance or mingling with people they don't know? Set up a small station filled with activities that are age-appropriate for your little guests. Coloring pages, game sheets, crayons and small table games are usually appreciated. You can also set out some kid-friendly snacks to keep those little tummies happy while they wait for the bridal party to arrive.
And finally, spruce up the restrooms with a few well placed amenities. Most likely, no one will be raving about the mouthwash in the Ladies' Room, but it will be quietly appreciated. Take a look at the restrooms at your venue while on your site tour. Make note if it needs a little pick-me-up for your big day. Your guests may enjoy a lightly scented hand cream and hand soap, as well as a little air freshener. Ask your florist if they can put together a small arrangement to set on the counter to tie in your wedding design or colors.
These aren't the most talked about details in wedding planning, but they will certainly help your guests feel comfortable!
