Ever wonder why we honor certain wedding traditions? Most of us know the basics of etiquette, but we don't really know the origins of a tradition. For instance, in most wedding ceremonies in the U.S., the bride always stands next to the groom on his left side.
Why, you ask? Well, it seems that back in the day, a man would often find his bride by capturing her. Apparently, this could occur during her wedding ceremony as she was about to marry another man. The bride would always stand to the left of the groom so that he could fight off would-be kidnappers with his sword hand. (Where did this leave the left-handed groom?)
And, in Anglo-Saxon England, the groom would ask his strongest and most fierce friend to help him defend his bride during the wedding. Thus, the origins of the Best Man.
